Personal Trainer since 2019

When I started as a personal trainer in Kuching a few years ago, things were way cheaper. Back in 2019 (pre covid), one-to-one personal training sessions cost around RM60–RM100. Today, rates have gone up quite a bit. In 2025 , the average PT sessions in Kuching may range between rm 80 – 120 . Why? Two big reasons: inflation (everything costs more!) and trainers here have gotten better. In 2025, more trainers than ever are making this their full-time job.

In Malaysia, there’s still no official rules for fitness trainers, so prices and service quality can be all over the place. Before you spend your money, make sure you know exactly what you’re getting into—and if it’s worth what you’re paying! Here’s a breakdown of PT rates and the level of service to expect 😉

Disclaimer : These are just the general observations between my colleagues and I on the PT market in Kuching given that we’re in the fitness industry. This will only serve as a guide. Always do your own survey before making any purchasing decision

Semi-Privates

Besides 1-to-1 sessions, you should also know about “semi-private” training. These sessions usually have one coach training 2–3 people at once. They’re not fully personalized, but lots of gyms and freelance trainers still call them “personal training.” Always double-check this before signing up, so you’re not shocked when another client pops up during your session! 😅

I won’t go too deep into semi-private training here (we’re mostly talking about 1-to-1), but just know prices range from RM40–RM100 per session per person.

When getting Semi Private Sessions, it's best to find your own partner

1 to 1 Personal Training

rm 60-80/ session (Low end )

This is usually what you’ll pay for 1-to-1 training at smaller local gyms around Kuching. Trainers at this price might be freelancers or part-timers, so the experience can be a bit… interesting. 😅

What to expect:

  • Timing is Flexible (Too Flexible?)
Your trainer might arrive late, end sessions early, or occasionally even skip sessions. On the bright side, they’ll probably be chill if you do the same!

  • Random Workouts
Don’t expect a proper workout program. You might do something totally different every session, depending on what the trainer feels like that day.

  • Less Personalized
Your workouts may just be whatever your trainer did earlier or plans for other clients—nothing specific to your goals.

  • Distracted Sessions
Trainers may spend time on their phone or even sneak in their own workout during yours. They’ll probably still check on you occasionally, though.

  • Certifications Optional
Workouts may come from the trainer’s own experiments rather than professional training.

  • No Progress Tracking
Don’t expect detailed tracking of your progress or results.

If you just need a workout buddy and don’t mind the casual vibe, this could work for you. But if you’re looking for something more serious, keep reading!

rm 80 - 120/ session (mid tier)

This is the typical rate you’ll find at most proper or bigger gyms around Kuching. At this price, things usually get a bit more professional. Here’s what to expect:

  • Certified Trainers
Trainers usually have at least a basic certification.

  • Structured-ish Workouts
Expect some structure, but workouts can still change based on the trainer’s mood or “feel.” There may not be a proper program in place and your trainer may just be looking at doing workout sessions rather than considering the program as a whole

  • Better Time Management
Generally reliable with schedules. Trainers won’t often show up late or cancel last minute. They’ll probably have clear policies about rescheduling or cancelling sessions too.

  • Session-Based Selling
They’ll usually sell training packages based on your budget or availability—not necessarily your specific goals or timelines.

  • Basic Consultation & Assessment
Expect some kind of assessment when you start, but don’t count on anything too detailed.

  • Progress Tracking (Sort Of)
They’ll probably track your progress, but how detailed this is can vary between trainers.

  • Decent Technique
Trainers generally know the basics of exercise form, but may not always understand how different body types move (like someone tall vs someone short).

  • Little Outside Tracking
Usually won’t track things other than your workouts.

Most people will find personal trainers in this range good enough. Just keep in mind the quality can still vary—especially at bigger gyms, since trainers often work independently. If you find a good one at this price, lock in a longer package because their rates might go up soon! 😂

rm 120 - 160/session (upper Tier)

Now we’re talking premium personal training in Kuching! Trainers in this price range are generally professional, serious about coaching, and do it full-time. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Certified and Educated
Trainers definitely have certifications and proper education in coaching.

  • Strong Professionalism
Good with schedules and clear on policies. Expect defined rules on cancellations, rescheduling, and how long packages last.

  • Tailored and Structured Programs
Training here is genuinely personalized. Programs match your goals, needs, and current condition.

  • Detailed Consultation and Assessment
You’ll go through proper assessments, consultations, and consistent progress tracking.

  • Better Knowledge of Movement & Anatomy
Trainers have a solid understanding of how different body types move and what exercises are best for you.

  • Program-Based Packages
Trainers focus on recommending the right frequency and duration of training based on your goals—not just selling sessions for the sake of selling.

  • Holistic Approach
They’ll pay attention to what you’re doing outside the gym, too—nutrition, sleep, stress, physical activity—and keep you accountable.

  • Consistent Results
With structure and accountability, you’ll likely stick to your program better and see improved results.

If you’ve struggled with consistency, have pain or injuries, or feel you need specialized attention, trainers in this range (or higher) are the way to go. Most ILift trainers charge within this range, except for Elite trainers who are on the higher side.

Side note : Watch out for trainers who charge high rates but skip consultations or assessments. Always make sure they’re providing the quality service you’re paying for! 😅

rm 160 - 200+ /session (elite)

This is where you’ll find Kuching’s top-level trainers. These trainers have built a solid reputation, have tons of experience, and are often fully booked—so they can charge higher prices.

Their professionalism and standards are similar to the upper-tier trainers we mentioned before, but they usually offer even more value—like deeper knowledge, extra attention, or services beyond regular training sessions.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more for the absolute best, this is the range to look at. Just remember, premium pricing should always mean premium service!

Conclusion

After doing over 100 consultations in the past 2 years, I noticed something important: trying to save money on personal training often ends up costing you more. Many people who picked cheaper trainers didn’t get the results they wanted or ended up having a bad experience😅

At ILift, we charge upper-range rates because we constantly measure ourselves against the standards I’ve shared above. Plus, we give you your own private workout space—no intimidating crowds, just a comfortable place to train. You can always schedule a Free consultation to see for yourself

To wrap it up,  personal training rates in Kuching vary widely—from RM60 to over RM200 per session. There may be some outliers , but this is the general range . When choosing a trainer, keep these standards in mind. Paying a bit more usually means higher expectations and better results.
